The valued client, a large Oil & Gas client are seeking an experienced Process Safety and Risk Engineer to join their busy Calgary team on a long-term contract basis.

Roles and Responsibilities
Scope of Work for Process Safety and Risk Engineer
- Projects understand and implement process safety engineering activities and deliverables to address operations integrity aspects of facility hazards in design, construction and future operations.
- Human factors considerations are included in each project design and operations practices/plans.
- Industrial hygiene considerations are included in each project design and operations practices/plans.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist in providing support to project practitioners who are developing the Risk Assessment and Management Plan (RAMP). Typical examples of these risk assessments include:
- Hazard Identification Studies
- Consequence Analysis Studies
- HAZOPS
- Dedicated/specific risk assessments
- Enhanced Process Safety/Scenario Management Register
- Pre-Startup Safety Review
- Be the main point of contact to lead risk assessments throughout the life of project. Subsequent risk assessment may re-evaluate findings from previous risk.
- E.g. Conceptual risk assessment (CRA) - checklist and structured risk assessment (SRA) where scenarios are documented.
- Facilitate the implementation of the Scenario Management Process where major hazards are identified, identification of high consequence of potential scenarios, defining and managing critical safeguards and verifying scenario management effectiveness.
- Facilitate risk assessment that help determine the safety integrity level (SIL) assignments
- Provide human factor considerations are included in each project design and operations practices/plans
- Participate or ensure industrial hygiene considerations are included in each project design and operations practices/plans including the Inherent SHE review (ISHER)
- Provide endorsement of RAMP changes or updates.
- Facilitate the implementation of enhanced process safety scenario management process.
- Be able to guide project teams to provide engineering support and consultation for projects:
- Equipment layout
- Layout hazardous area classification
- Escape, evacuation, and rescue
- Emergency shutdown (ESD) and isolation
- Fire protection and fire/gas detection equipment design
- Human factors
- High integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) design
- Where required provide specific requirements on how to apply these factors listed above.
- Support criticality assessments for risk-based engineering surveillance support for projects with regards to process safety
- Provide risk assessment training (where appropriate)
- Stewarding the approval of deviations to action resolution plans and screening deviations to ensure “risk-after” ranking does not elevate to a higher risk category.
- Provide endorsement of design changes from a safety perspective for MOC post final HAZOP
- Training and coaching project managers and project engineers on safety & loss requirements for projects.
- Develop the network for specialized process safety engineer support and be the single point of contact (SPOC) for process safety specialized skills listed below.
- Be a licensed and practicing APEGA engineer
- Previous experience as a Loss and Prevention or Process Safety Risk Engineer
- Risk Assessment experience is an asset.
- Guide word HAZOP experience is an asset but not required.
