Description:

The clients Environment & Regulatory team is currently seeking a field-based Contract Environmental Advisor supporting the growth of their oil sands facilities primarily at Christina Lake, however support for an additional facility in Alberta may be required on some shifts. The Contract Environmental Advisor will be reporting to the Senior Coordinator of Environmental Operations, the Contract Environmental Advisor will provide field expertise and guidance related to management and monitoring of environmental approvals and activities at their oil sands facility. This role will primarily support their capital growth programs. As such, the contractor will work closely with construction and well delivery teams, as well as operations staff and Calgary based regulatory to ensure environmental issues and approval conditions are understood and responsibly managed.

This position will be responsible for completing the below general list of deliverables:

• Participate in the field execution of environmental and regulatory activities, required to support their exploration, construction, and operations activities. Tasks will include, data collection, monitoring, equipment setup and removal, report writing as well as the management, and scheduling of 3rd party environmental contractors
• Field environmental data collection will include tasks such as freshwater usage, lake level measurements, stream gaging, wildlife sweeps, soil sampling etc. These data will be collected using the clients standardized process, tools and record management
• Advise and report, in consultation with Calgary based environmental advisors, on EPEA, Water Act, Public Lands Act, and all other related environmental compliance activities
• Maintain current and emerging knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements and how they may potentially affect company business plans
• Participate in process development specific to the environment group and execution of field environmental activities.
• Identify and communicate environmental risks to onsite environmental leadership and the accountable site leadership including proactive environmental issue identification
• Provide field assistance and guidance for environmental risk assessments, incident mitigation (spills/releases/contraventions) and reporting (immediate notifications and follow up reports)
• Work and coordinate with Calgary & Field Environmental Advisors, third party environmental consultants and shared service providers to support field activities by managing field logistics, monitoring field activities to ensure all work is compliant with environmental regulatory requirements and provide environmental guidance/direction and environmental risk management advice.
• Support and/or conduct environmental audits and inspections
• Make decisions based on what’s best for the client organization and embrace decisions once made
• The successful candidate will have a strong safety-first mindset and be a team player who collaborates well with partners within their team as well as with members of the exploration, construction, and production teams.
• Management and support to 3rd party environmental contractors, including safety aspects of their work will also be required competencies.
• Work tasks will generally be completed outdoors, in the varied climate and environmental settings, present in the Boreal Forest. As such the role will have some moderate physical demands.

Qualifications:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• University degree in Environmental Science, Resource Management, Biology or a related discipline with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a field environmental advisory capacity for oil and gas developments in Western Canada OR a related technical diploma and a minimum of 8 years technical experience as stated above
• Project management, strong planning skills, strong technical skills and proactive issue management will be required to be successful in this role.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and Provincial environmental regulations related to oil and gas development and operations in Western Canada with a focus on the Water Act, Public Lands Act and EPEA approval
• Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented, and suited to work as part of a field-based team
