Electrical High Voltage Technician (Staff Position)

The client is one of the world’s largest independent E&P companies based on production and proved reserves. The client’s terminal, located in Teesside at the mouth of the river Tees, is a crude oil reception, processing, storage and trans-shipment installation. The terminal also fractionates natural gas liquids into ethane, propane and butane.

Our client is currently recruiting for an experienced Electrical High Voltage Technician (Staff Position) to join the Team at the Teesside Oil & Gas Terminal – Expected start date February/March 2023.

The Company operates an extensive private distribution network at 11,000V, 3,300V and 400V. As part of our Electrical Maintenance team your responsibilities will include the day-to-day operation and maintenance of HV plant and apparatus including HV and LV switchgear, transformers, high voltage motors, and associated protection and control equipment. The ideal candidate will already be working in a similar role and will hold Authorised or Senior Authorised status, possibly from the power generation, transmission & distribution, rail, nuclear, or heavy process industries.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
•    Under direction, ensure the Company electrical network is operated and maintained to the highest standards.
•    Undertake preventative maintenance on HV plant and apparatus including bulk oil and vacuum switchgear, distribution transformers, and induction motors in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, British Standards and site requirements.
•    Undertake testing and calibration of protection relaying systems, including a diverse range of electromechanical, electronic, and numerical protection relays.
•    Install, repair, test and commission high voltage plant in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, British Standards
and site requirements.
•    Work accurately to engineering drawings and mark up drawings as required to record plant modifications.
•    Support the Control Person to effectively operate the distribution system to maximise system availability and reliability.
•    Provide specialist callout cover for HV system faults and undertake first-line diagnostic testing.
•    Diagnose the physical cause of faults on HV plant and apparatus and employ Defect Elimination methods to prevent reoccurrence.
•    Prepare high voltage switching plans and execute routine switching operations to isolate and restore high voltage plant and to reconfigure the electrical system as directed by the Control Person.
•    Issue, accept, receive and clear high voltage ‘Permit to Work’ and ‘Sanction to Test’ safety documents.
•    Set to work Company and third-party Competent Persons on high voltage plant and apparatus.
•    Generate defect reports and maintenance requests using the Company’s Maintenance Management System (SAP).
•    Assist in the development of and review of relevant procedures, planned maintenance instructions, and risk assessments

Competency Requirements
•    Relevant approved apprenticeship/NVQ level 3 or equivalent – Essential
•    Minimum City & Guilds / ONC certificate in Electrical Engineering or equivalent – Essential
•    Strong technical understanding of general electrical equipment and knowledge of electrical protection and metering – Essential
•    Prior experience of maintenance and operation of high voltage plant and apparatus – Essential
•    COMPEX certificate and knowledge of DSEAR and ATEX legislation – Desirable
•    Nationally recognised qualification in Test & Inspection or substantial commissioning experience in lieu - Essential
•    Hold a Full UK driving licence and to drive company vehicles where appropriate – Essential
•    Computer-literate with experience of Microsoft Office packages and SAP – Essential
•    Appropriate Physical and Mental Capability to undertake the role (Work at Height, Work in Confined Spaces, Ability to wear Breathing Apparatus) – Essential
